Merlin Holiday Fanfiction
Merry Christmas everyone!  Hope you all have been having a good holiday season so far....I had a good Christmas yesterday, but I'll post more on that later.

I'm not usually one for fanfic much, but such is my determination to help Team Morgana win this round over at merlin_land  that I wrote this fic (my first completed fanfic ever!) for a challenge there to write a holiday fanfiction involving certain prompts--the prompts about "jewelry" and "a present" immediately made me think of that scene of Uther at the end of 2x12, and with this fic I tried to imagine what he was thinking about in that scene....

Title: "The Necklace"
Rating: PG
Pairing: Uther/Morgana, some Arthur/Morgana
Word Count: 1,554
Disclaimer: I do not own "Merlin" or any of its characters.  This is written only for fun, not profit.
Summary: Looking at one of Morgana's necklaces, Uther reminisces about the Yuletide when he gave it to her.
Notes/Warnings: Major spoilers for episode 2x12 of "Merlin."  The extra background info on Morgana is based on the legend.  And thanks so much to llywela13 for beta-ing!

Uther glanced around the corridor, assuring himself that nobody was in sight, before quietly opening Morgana's door and slipping into her room.  As always, his heart raced just a little as he did so, desperately hoping against hope that it might have been all just a bad dream, that she might be in the bed sleeping, her dark hair haloing her pale, lovely face...but of course, the bed was empty, as deep down Uther knew it would be all along.  The covers were still ruffled, as if any moment Morgana might return to bed from some nighttime wandering.  Her maidservant had not had the heart to fix up her mistress's room after Morgana's disappearance.  Everything in the room remained as Morgana had left it that fateful day, already one week past.

Uther moved across the moonlit room towards Morgana's vanity table and mirror, and picked up the string of colorful glass beads that lay there.  This had become a nightly ritual for him, coming in here and caressing her things, objects that she had once touched.  It was a way for him to still feel close to her, to keep her alive in his memories.  He began coming only at night, however, after Arthur had caught him at it once, holding this very same necklace; Uther did not wish to appear weak or vulnerable in the eyes of anyone, especially his son.

As Uther stroked the necklace's cool, smooth beads, his thoughts turned to the time when he had given it to Morgana three years before...

*         *          *

It was Yuletide, always one of the most festive seasons in Camelot.  Everywhere within the castle boughs of holly and garlands of pine hung from the walls, mead flowed freely in the Great Hall, and there were nightly feasts and entertainments, with the greatest feast of all taking place on the night of Yule itself.  It was also an occasion for the giving of gifts to loved ones....

Uther pulled the small, blue silken pouch out of his pocket once again, and tipped its contents into his left hand.  It was a necklace of colorful glass beads that he had commissioned for Morgana from a traveling craftsman, a token of his affections for her.  For the hundredth time, Uther eagerly imagined her face when she received it, picturing the way it would light up, and the smile that would curve her perfectly formed lips.  The craftsman had been from her home territory of Cornwall, a place that Morgana still missed, Uther knew, along with her beloved father Gorlois.  The beads were made of sea-glass, which Uther thought would remind Morgana of the roaring sea with which she had grown up, alongside her childhood home at the castle of Tintagel.  In this way, Uther hoped to truly touch Morgana's heart this holiday season.

Returning the necklace to its pouch, Uther gazed down through the window at the courtyard below.  Morgana and Arthur were there, taking advantage of the snow that had fallen the night before to stage a snowball fight, while some of the knights of Camelot watched with amusement.  Uther himself couldn't help an indulgent smile at the sight of them; the two of them had fought one way or another since the first day Uther had introduced them when he took Morgana into his care.  He had to admire Morgana's ever present courage and bold spirit, which reminded him so much of his dear friend Gorlois.  No doubt she had been the one to initiate the snowball fight.

He decided to go downstairs and join them in the courtyard.  In any case, he had to remind them that they would soon need to end their game in order to prepare for the Yule feast that night.

"Come now, surely a brave knight of Camelot such as yourself isn't afraid of little old me?" Morgana taunted as Arthur attempted to end their battle after being nailed in the face by one of her snowballs for the fourth time.

"No, of course not!" Arthur retorted, attempting to wipe the snow off of his face with as much dignity as possible.  "I'm merely looking out for your own well-being, that's all...I fear that you er, might freeze if you stay out of doors for much longer...ah, Father!" he said with relief as he spotted Uther stepping into the courtyard.

Uther acknowledged his son with a nod and turned to Morgana.  "Morgana, Arthur is right, it's time that you come inside to warm up.  You need to begin getting ready anyway for the Yule feast."

Morgana sighed dramatically, dropping the remaining snowballs she had been holding.  "Saved by your daddy, just in time," she teased Arthur in a low voice as she passed him by on her way inside.

As she came alongside Uther by the castle doorway, Morgana suddenly slipped on a hidden patch of ice and began to fall over.  However, Uther reacted quickly and caught his ward by the arms before she hit the ground, steadying her.

Time seemed to slow down for Uther as he held onto Morgana's arms a moment longer than necessary, savoring that touch, focusing only on the feel of her strong yet slender arms beneath his callused hands.  Uther never permitted himself to hold Morgana as often as he'd like...as often as he needed.  Morgana remained still beneath his grip, appearing surprised.

Reluctantly Uther released her, stepping away and looking down at the ground for a moment to avoid her eyes.  But Morgana merely touched his arm and smiled as he glanced back up at her.  "Thank you, my lord.  You certainly retain some quick reflexes."

Turning to Arthur, who was now alongside them, she added, "Perhaps you could learn from him, Arthur.  Then you would be able to dodge my snowballs better!"

Uther entered the castle, shaking his head ruefully, before he could hear his son's grumbled reply.

In the Great Hall the fires crackled merrily as the guests at the feast finished eating and began to move onto the dance floor.  As usual, Uther had had trouble keeping his eyes off of his ward, who had come to the feast that night wearing a long burgundy gown with trailing sleeves--the cold and drafty weather made her sleeveless gown of the same color impossible to wear.  At this moment she was dancing with Arthur, still teasing him about their earlier snowball fight, from the looks of it.  Uther took another draught of mead from his silver goblet and drummed his fingers on the table impatiently, waiting for the right moment to approach her.  He compulsively felt in his pocket for the necklace pouch.

A few minutes later Arthur had finally changed partners, and Morgana was chatting with her maid on the sidelines.  Uther immediately arose and strode over to them.

"May I have the honor of a dance?" he asked her quickly.

Morgana seemed a little taken aback.  "Of course," she replied, shooting a glance at her maid before taking his outstretched hand.  They moved out onto the crowded dance floor as the court musicians began playing a new tune.

"I hope that you have been enjoying this year's festivities," Uther remarked, as they circled around each other in the complicated steps of the dance.

Morgana smiled at him. "You know I have."  They continued dancing in silence for a few more moments, Uther relishing every small touch the dance entailed, before he continued.

"I have a gift for you. Something special I had made."

A look of interest and anticipation flitted across her face, before she recovered herself with her usual wit.  "Well, aren't you being mysterious!  Let's see it then, shall we?  You know I hate to be kept in suspense...."

"Alright then."  Uther led Morgana off the dance floor and handed her the pouch.  She took it and gently removed the necklace from inside, rubbing her fingers over the smooth glass.

"Is this...sea glass?" she asked, her voice unreadable.

Uther nodded.  "It's Cornish-made.  I hope you like it."

Morgana gazed at it all the more closely, a somewhat faraway look in her eyes; perhaps she was remembering the past.  Then she looked up and gave Uther that wide, warm smile that he had hoped for, and which made his own heart feel lighter.

"Thank you, Uther," she said, her voice catching a little.  "This means a lot to me."  She placed the necklace over her head and impulsively embraced Uther, giving him a quick peck on the cheek.

Breaking away, a small frown creased her brow. "But wait a moment, I don't have anything to give to you," she said slowly.

Uther laughed and touched her face fondly.  "You've already given me more than enough just now.  Happy Yule, Morgana."

*          *          *

Recalling himself to the present, Uther sighed heavily.  He gripped the necklace tightly, like a talisman, wishing with all his heart that he could return to that happier time, when Morgana had still been close, had still loved him, had still been in Camelot....He was still not entirely sure what had gone wrong in these last few years, but the guilt ate at him every day.  He would never forgive himself for failing to protect her from Morgause.

Uther kissed the necklace, and placed it gently on the table before turning to leave.  "Goodnight, Morgana."

Feedback appreciated, especially since it's my first one. :)

Thank you very much! And yes, the way they are, I'm sure they would have snowball fights...:p

This was lovely. I always love it when people capture the sweeter moments between them.

Awww...that was kind of heart-breaking. It totally just reminded me of the fact that there are so many broken relationships now that Morgana is gone. I have no idea what they're going to do with her next season...

Anyway, Arthur's sorrow was very clear, and it made my heart break for him just a bit. He really isn't such a horrible man, I don't think. It's still clear to me how much he adores her, and I think your fic captured that perfectly.

Also, I love how you threw some Arthur/Morgana in there as well *grins* ;)

This was a great read! Good job :D

Oh dear, I just realized I never got around to responding to this...thanks so much for reading it, and for your comments! :) Yeah, Morgana is leaving several broken relationships behind, though I feel like this would have been more clear had they continued to develop/show Arthur/Morgana (even as only siblings if they so desired) and Gwen/Morgana...*sigh* At least they kept more or less Uther/Morgana! ;)

And yeah, I couldn't resist getting in a little Arthur/Morgana as well, since it was my first ship love for the show! ;) I'm glad I love U/M too though, given how AMor went...

awwww, such a sweet flashback, thanks for creating that backstory for the necklace =)

Sure, thanks for reading! :) Love your icon, btw! I should probably invest in a U/M icon, this one is close in that you can see the corner of Uther's cloak, lol. I have like 4 AMor icons, but since they have basically disappeared from the show altogether...

it was a pleasure & thanks! =)
nowadays I only have one morgana&arthur, but morgana is the one I have more icons of after arthur/james, so I'm always on the "oh pretty icon, oh wait, shouldn't add it since I've got so many already" mindest XD

it's extremely disconcerting how on this second series they have pushed so hard the guinevere/arthur, in my opinion with some of the worst writting coherence of the show, that they had to push the morgana/arthur far away or it would be too obvious that morgana-arthur had already 'feelings' (I personally lean most days towards siblings but yes considering the beginning of the show and valiant) and coupled with the fact that our writers are not capable of writing two strong females in the same episode, much less the same scene, without making on of them a wallpaper or a über delicate being... oh well I shall stop rambling about the writing in the show or I won't ever stop.
sherrilina: Arthur/Morgana (Merlin)sherrilina on February 28th, 2010 09:30 pm (UTC)
Lol, I can totally sympathize with such ramblings, I'm guilty of them all too often myself....stupid show! >:( I feel the same way, I mean I always saw A/Mor as more romantic, but I would be willing to settle for them as siblings just as long as we got the same fun interactions between them...but no, we weren't permitted even that much! *sigh* And yeah, the writers are pretty awful at coherence/continuity....

Yep all of my icons are of Morgana, Arthur, or both! :p I realize I don't have any icons of other people on the show...I always hate to cut icons though because then it disappears from where I've used them before....(the best solution would be to have 100 icons, lol, but I can't afford to spend that much money on a LJ! ;))

This is SO sweet! Very well done - such a lovely story! And you managed to get in Arthur/Morgana AND Uther/Morgana, two pairings that I love! <333
sherrilina: Morgana (Merlin)sherrilina on February 28th, 2010 09:26 pm (UTC)
Thanks! *hug* And yep, even though it was mainly Uther/Morgana, I couldn't help but include a little of my original OTP as well! ;) I love both pairings almost equally I'd say (funny how that works out!), though I've been feeling more enthusiasm for U/M since the writers killed A/Mor through neglect this season...*sigh*

What can we say, Morgana goes well with Pendragon men! :D
