Camelot: 'Tis a Silly Place...(Thoughts on the Show + Torchwood + Meme)
So I finally caught up on Camelot, after discovering that it was all already on Netflix Streaming, and though I was originally more than okay with the cancellation news (I had basically put watching on hold, it had gotten to be so boring to me), I am rather disappointed now after finishing the season--I think it did get much better/more interesting by the end, and I would have liked to see how some of the storylines raised in the finale were continued.  But it was too little, too late, with too many writing flaws and the terrible casting decision of JCB for Arthur sealing its fate.  What wasted potential....:(

More thoughts:

Besides Arthur being so pathetic and weak (IDK what they were thinking casting this guy as the lead male in TMI, I sure hope this doesn't kill that franchise as well after one film!), the rest of the cast actually wasn't bad.  Eva Green as my girl Morgan obviously stole the show, especially towards the end when she was quite the flawless and stunning HBIC (with the most gorgeous dresses and looks most of the time)--as I expected.  I thought they did an interesting spin on her, especially with her traumatic childhood and daddy issues, god is Uther a horrible excuse for a human being in this one! Poor Morgan(a), she always has childhood trauma and daddy issues it seems, in almost every version (Merlin included).  And of course Eva was fantastic, playing both her defiance and steel and her vulnerability at the same time.  I wish we could know why the cunning creepy nun was helping her like that, and the significance of the Wolf thing.  It was also interesting how Morgan managed to get so close to gaining the crown--a pity she wasn't able to feel it on her head for even a moment!

But she was not the only one, I also loved Merlin in this version (more than Colin Morgan's I think, even), he was just so snarky and hilarious (definitely had some of the best lines) but also intriguing and vulnerable in his own way with his instability and issues with magical addiction--definitely a twist on Merlin I haven't seen before!  I really enjoyed Fiennes in the role.  And while I expected to love Morgan (obviously, with her being my favorite in the legend), I was not expecting to love Guenevere so much!  it probably helps that she was played by Tasmin Egerton, who played Morgaine (as a child at least) in my favorite Arthurian TV production, The Mists of Avalon! ;) (See icon).  I just liked how badass and intelligent she was, it was not what I was expecting (she had some serious hair issues though sometimes though, lol, to go with some ridic Morgan outfits! :p).  I even kind of liked her an Arthur together, or at least I enjoyed the different angle on it, making her married to someone else first and their romance all ~forbidden~....I kind of would have liked to see when they would have gotten together after Leontes' death.

Igraine was interesting for me in that initially, and for most of the show she just annoyed the crap of me, seeming so weak and pathetic and prim, but I did like her more by the end, and even liked her romance with Merlin which at first just made me roll my eyes--perhaps its d00med ending also appealed to me....;). The storyline with the little orphan boy touched me the most, and I think it exposed a really nice hidden side to Igraine and Merlin, and what they've been up to in Camelot.  I also adored the insight it gave us into Morgana, poor thing, I don't think anyone had ever really told her before that he/she loved her, you could see what those words meant to her, how hungry she was for them, and then when she accidentally killed him, and Merlin's guilt-tripping...;_;  It all really reminded me of the BTVS epp "Who Are You?" actually, when Faith is riding around in Buffy's body (sleeping with Buffy's boyfriend too) and in the process comes to realize how low she has fallen, how much she hates herself, and how much she envies and desires Buffy's network of loved ones/support and respect.  I really felt for Morgan here.  The actress playing Igraine did a good job playing Morgan playing Igraine.  (And kind of got some Merlin/Morgan shippy vibes as well...at first I thought he knew it was Morgan, since she was being so obvious about it, but I guess not!).  Poor Merlin too...

I'm just so disappointed with this show in the end, because it had SO much potential--in the premise, the storylines, the characters, the interesting twists on Arthurian Legend (the story of Excalibur was another one)--and between a fatal casting error (Arthur), and just bad or boring writing so much of the time (it was amazing how even though a storyline could be intriguing, the epps still dragged so much, especially with battles or circular cheesy conversations.  To think I was so excited for this show, and waited eagerly for it for TWO YEARS. ;_;

I also have to say how much I did not appreciate the sleaziness and cheap objectification of women that permeated this show from the get-go, lingering far too often on naked females and sex to the point of being gratuitous--and especially where Morgan was concerned, sadly. The "entertainment" too of half-naked dancing girls was also absurd, reminding me of the costume fail in Excalibur as well--yeah, those look like traditional Dark Ages costumes alright! *rolleyes* It happens/annoys me in other shows as well (HBO is second-worst in doing this after Starz), but I can usually tolerate it more if there's enough other good substance to love.  Oh well...I watch too many shows anyway, I could use a few less I suppose...:/

Anyway, one more show checked off my summer watching list now!  And now I'm getting pretty excited about Torchwood: Miracle Day (tonight!), I've heard a couple radio spots (which was pretty exciting since I get so sick of hearing radio spots for stupid-sounding shows I have no interest in ever watching) and once saw someone reading an advance review from the looks of it in the Wall Street Journal on the subway (I tried without much success to read over his shoulder, lol, I could see a big picture of Jack in his coat).  I'm curious to see what's happening with Jack and Gwen and Rhys and the new baby, and how they'll all cope moving bases to the States....though I'm also a bit nervous about how they will handle Ianto, and just whether it will be too action-y/Americanized--I'm hoping the commercials are overemphasizing that aspect because of marketing to this audience or something.  O_o  COE was amazing, and I'd love to see something like that...

Oh and here's a meme (this one snagged from sunnytyler001), one of many cool ones I've seen over my hiatus and that I wish to participate in--I'm bored, PLEASE give me some shows! :D

Leave me a show and I'll tell you

I didn't know Camelot got cancelled! (I mean, I thought it would, considering we didn't hear anything about it, but I didn't know for sure.) I'm disappointed about that. I thought that the end of the season really set things up to be interesting. And of course I loved Morgan. And I like the Merlin-as-storyteller trope, so I loved the Excalibur episode. And having a weak Arthur was annoying, but I also thought that that added to the Merlin storyteller thing. Which, admittedly, the show didn't play up, but in my head it works well, haha.
sherrilina: Arthur/Morgana 3 (Merlin)sherrilina on July 9th, 2011 11:30 am (UTC)
Yep, it did. :( I guess now you know for sure...and yeah, I agree that it was setting some interesting things up. What do you mean by Storyteller trope, the fact that he was crafting the legend around Arthur and giving his version of the facts? I agree, it was interesting, esp as far as the hand pushing the sword out of the lake!
nearer than the moon am i to you: skins; frankyodette_river on July 9th, 2011 01:16 pm (UTC)
Yeah, that's what I mean. Merlin telling stories to make Arthur's reign larger than life. That was a major part of Here Lies Arthur by Philip Reeve, and I think it's one reason why I'm so into Arthurian legend--the reasons why the stories have lasted so long, and how they might once have been, and how they've been retold. Things like that.
sherrilina: Arthur and Morgaine (Mists of Avalon)sherrilina on July 9th, 2011 01:29 pm (UTC)
Yeah, it is really interesting, especially the myriad ways in which the same basic story can be told--how he gets the sword, who sleeps with him Morgan(a) or Morgause, how he was conceived, etc--my favorite thing about seeing different televised or literary versions of the book is finding out how each does things...

Ooh what kind of book is that, a novel or a book about the legends?
nearer than the moon am i to youodette_river on July 9th, 2011 05:00 pm (UTC)
It's a YA novel that I quite like.

I agree with you mostly on the Camelot front - it DID have so much left to give and aside from some of the cast, the rest were brilliant. I felt that the end half of the last episode was really great. I definately wish that Sybil was explained more and the Wolf... I was surprised too by the fact I, for the first time, liked a Guinevere (well, most of the time...)
It is a shame I think :\

Doctor Who :)

sherrilina: Arthur/Chicken (Merlin)sherrilina on July 9th, 2011 04:40 pm (UTC)
Oh yeah Sybil, that was her name! I just thought of her as The Nun, lol...it is a shame we never learned more about her! And yeah, I think this was the first time I liked a Gwen as well!

And oooh okay thanks, I'll get back to you on DW! :D
Always distant. Always silent.: Camelot - Morgan: You're my acid queenthemirrorofsin on July 9th, 2011 04:43 pm (UTC)
Lol - the last scene was really sad :( I really liked the Morgan/Sybil dynamic - though the most pointless character was Vivian.
She was actually okay!

Meme: DW Ships
My OTP: Doctor/Rose! <333 (9/Rose onwards pretty much, part of the appeal for me are the ongoing feelings/rel. b/t them despite his regen)

My OT3: Doctor (Nine)/Rose/Jack--they were such a fun dynamic at the end of s1, I would have liked to see more of it. Plus I kinda love J's unrequited love while the Doctor only really has eyes for Rose, NGL! :p

My guilty pleasure ship: IDK really...Doctor/Master? Eleven/Rose or Martha/Mickey, since people seem to ~judge those ships so much?

A ship that makes you nauseous: Eleven/Amy--I think nas. is too strong a word perhaps, but that is close to how I feel whenever Amy tried to ~seduce the Doctor (or force herself on him in s5), both b/c of Rory but also b/c Eleven acts in such a fatherly/grandfatherly way towards Amy (having met her first as a little kid especially, I think he always sees her as little Amelia inside) that it just feels wrong...:/

A ship that is too fluffy for words: Well besides Ten/Rose in s2, Amy/Rory this season has been adorable! <333

A ship that gives me nightmares: Eh, IDK Doctor/River? (Don't hit me! :p). I don't dislike them quite as much after this season, but there's still the big lack of consent thing that arises from one knowing so much more than the other at any given time, and I kind of get nightmares at the idea of River being his only Companion at some point, although it's not as scary as it once was since River has grown on me a bit...;)

The sexiest ship to ever sail: Doctor/Rose, especially Nine/Rose in the sexy/UST dept. (Though it's amazing how much chemistry Billie has with both men!)

I dislike Eleven/Amy too.

Awh River <3<3<3 Though I'm glad she's grown on your a bit

Mmm I just dislike Billie Piper a lot so *shrug*

I think Eleven/Amy is even more awkward now that he's like, snogging her daughter? O_o
Forgotten memoriesblue_emotion on July 10th, 2011 11:26 pm (UTC)
I've given up on Camelot, I wasn't exactly gripped by it, and then when I heard it had been dropped I just decided not to bother watching any more tbh.

As for the meme, I give yooou The Vampire Diaries, because I'd like to know more about your ships from this show :)

(and I'm still sulking we don't get Torchwood to Thursday, it just feels wrong haha)
sherrilina: Damon/Teddy (Vampire Diaries)sherrilina on July 11th, 2011 01:07 am (UTC)
Yeah, I definitely felt the same about Camelot, but wanted to finish it for the sake of completeness...it does get decent by the end, but maybe it'd be less frustrating if you didn't get to that point since it's canceled anyway...:/

Muahaha re: Torchwood! :p Though yeah, it is weird, and TBH I haven't seen it yet either because I was away this weekend, but hopefully I'll be able to see it before Thursday...

Okay thanks, lol, this is going to be tricky! ;)

My OTP: TBH, IDEK rn...up until recently I would have said Damon/Elena for sure, since they were the first ship that got me really excited and made me feel passionate...but lately the writers have been making it difficult. :( So IDK if I can still call them an OTP, and so far no other contender has surfaced definitively--I loved then hated then loved Caroline/Tyler in such quick succession I can't be sure on them. Maybe just the Damon/Stefan brotherly love?

My OT3: Damon/Elena/Stefan! (This one is easier...solve it with threesome! :p)

My guilty pleasure ship: Stefan/Katherine (I dig her twisted love for him and they're hot...)

A ship that makes me nauseous: Not that I think anyone ships it, but Damon/Reporter Lady (I can't even remember her name), their whole relationship is just so horrible and nausea-inducing! :/

A ship too fluffy for words: Stefan/Elena (they can be sooo adorkable together I can't even...)

A ship that gives me nightmares: Klaus/Anyone, ugh.

The sexiest ship to ever set sail: Caroline/Tyler I guess (though at their best, like 1x19, Damon/Elena certainly fit this description as well!)
Jennifer: Harry Potter - H/Hr hmsharmony on July 10th, 2011 11:34 pm (UTC)
I agree -- Camelot started coming together at the end (although THANKS FOR KILLING OFF ONE OF MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS -- I was only meh about Igraine at the beginning, but somehow, by the end, she had really wormed her way into my heart, and I was DEVASTATED when she died D =). Definitely agree that JCB wasn't the best casting. I remained neutral on it for a while because I wanted to give him a chance, but ... yeah. It just didn't work. Everyone else, however, was FANTASTIC. They should've thrown their own twist into the legend, killed off Arthur, and just let us go on with all of the others. =P

Oh, God. The gratuitous naked/half-naked females scenes were RIDICULOUS. Really? They were REALLY necessary? Ugh, stupid writers, gtfo.

Did you watch Torchwood yet?!?!?!

If someone hasn't asked it yet, Harry Potter for your meme! I don't think I know your guilty pleasure (although I can imagine which ships gives you nightmares/makes you nauseous =P).
sherrilina: Harry/Hermione (HP)sherrilina on July 11th, 2011 01:48 am (UTC)
Yeah, I wasn't as attached to Igraine as that, but I did like her better by the end, and her death was sad! (Esp b/c of Merlin's reaction..:( ). And glad I wasn't the only one to feel that way, re: the women! /rolleyes/

NO I HAVE NOT GOTTEN TO SEE IT YET!!! :( I've been out of town this weekend, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow or Tuesday to see it...was it good?!

And okay, haha I just watched some of the Larry King HP special because it was on in the airport gate waiting area I'm in rn...HP here we go! :)

My OTP: Harry/Hermione of course! ♥ (Bet you didn't see that one coming! :p). Although Snape/Lily probably comes in second, the only remotely canon ship in that series I liked...

My OT3: Well I guess Harry/Hermione/Ron as a FRIENDSHIP only...(Otherwise maybe Hermione/Harry/Luna? IDK I ship Harry with both).

My guilty pleasure ship: Tom/Ginny In the full twisted, dark, wrong sense though, and only AU...it's a long story. I made a vid though...:p.

A ship that makes me nauseous: HARRY/GINNY. Superficial, antifeminist and wrong on SO many levels, lame and cheesy and all around-awful...ugh. :/ Also any ship with Voldemort really (like present!day one), like Harry/Voldemort, Hermione/Voldemort, Voldemort/Bellatrix...

Oh, and Sirius/Remus, especially the nauseatingly sugar sweet "puppy love" way they are portrayed in fandom that has no relation to canon, combined with the insistence that they are canon. /sigh

A ship that is too fluffy for words: Dean/Luna, I can't even...<333. Damn JK for not even allowing us this!

A ship that gives me nightmares: RON/HERMIONE--with that level of immaturity and abusiveness in their relationship, it gives me nightmares about their future together/married life (like for Hermione's sake) and for the sake of their poor children who will no doubt grown up a bit traumatized by the constant, huge, scary fights of their parents...:/

The sexiest ship to ever sail: IDK...Sirius/James? :p. Or movie!Harry/Hermione...
Jennifer: Harry Potter - HBP H/Hr Balconyhmsharmony on July 11th, 2011 02:08 am (UTC)
IT WAS FANTASTIC. There's one scene where Gwen is a TOTAL badass. I died. Hopefully you'll enjoy it as well!

Harry/Hermione? OTP? WAH?! =P

It's funny how most Harry/Hermione shippers ship Harry with Luna as well! I'm with you on that one. =)

I actually now several people who ship Tom/Ginny! I don't ship it myself, but I can def understand the appeal of it.

Oh, God, when people start shipping present!day Voldemort with other people I just ... no. No. Let's not go there. Thanks.

I think the universe every day that TPTB found Dan and Emma. THEY DID SO MUCH FOR OUR SHIP.

Heh, IKR, re: H/Hr, I live to surprise! :p And yeah, I think it's a mark of how much H/G-hate is NOT just shipper bitterness at not getting our ship as some idiots claim, if we ship Harry with lots of other girls too and are rooting for other pairings, clearly it's H/G we don't like in of itself! *rolleyes* Stupid JK...>:(

And oh really, re: T/G? Nice! :D Glad you don't think I'm a freak for it, lol, some are like "omg it's raaaape!" and such.

Ack, I must watch the new TW soon, sounds excellent, stupid schoolwork getting in the way so far...:(
Iz: Harry Potteramaranthine3 on July 18th, 2011 12:16 am (UTC)
I've actually stopped watching Camelot weeks ago and I don't know when I'm going to catch up. I think that I've only watched 4 episodes. I agree with you that they did a mistake casing JCB as Arthur and I think that even without having the image of Bradley as Arthur in my head pretty much most of the times, I wouldn't like Jamie in this role. For me the way he played Arthur looked as if he was 10 years old. Tbh, I want to finish s1 because of Eva, who was amazing, but I don't know when will it happen.

The meme looks amazing, I'm going to snag it :D. Initially I wanted to ask about Harry Potter but I noticed that someone already gave it to you (I love all your answers, btw), so maybe The Borgias? :D

And just on a side note - did you know that the actress who played Sybil on Camelot in real life is married to Jeremy Irons (who of course plays Rodrigo Borgia)? I accidentally noticed it a while ago when browsing imdb.com and was like WHOA! ^^
sherrilina: Cesare/Lucrezia sherrilina on August 1st, 2011 05:01 am (UTC)
Gah sorry it's taken me so long to reply to this! :( Anyway, I think that you should catch up on Camelot, because it does get decent by the end, though sadly there is so much boring in between...:/

And okay yess let's go, The Borgias! :D

My OTP: CESARE/LUCREZIA, duh! As if there could be any other answer...;) These two, gah, I can't even, so beautifully tender and sweet and adorable while also steamy and sexy and hot and full of UST/chemistry at the same time! They way they love each other so completely, their utter devotion to one another, it so doesn't matter that they're related...

My OT3: IDK...I don't think I have one? Maybe Cesare/Lucrezia/Her Own Awesome?

My guilty pleasure ship: You mean besides the incestuous OTP? :p IDK, Cesare/Micheletto a little perhaps?

A ship that makes me nauseous: Giovanni Sforza/Lucrezia (though I don't think anyone actually ships it!)

A ship that is too fluffy for words: Cesare/Lucrezia! ;)

A ship that gives me nightmares: Rodrigo/Lucrezia O_o Just no...

The sexiest ship to ever set sail: CESARE/LUCREZIA!

Lol, this was pretty repetitive, wasn't it? With this show I'm afraid Cesare/Lucrezia is the only ship I'm really passionate about or feel for...what about you? :)

And just on a side note - did you know that the actress who played Sybil on Camelot in real life is married to Jeremy Irons (who of course plays Rodrigo Borgia)? I accidentally noticed it a while ago when browsing imdb.com and was like WHOA! ^^

No, I did NOT know this, how strange! O_o Especially since there was the whole competitiveness about the 3 big cable costume dramas coming out at the same time! I hear they have a kind of strange, open marriage actually...or I think I heard that anyway. I would not have expected her to be his wife in any case!
