Doctor Who Season 6b Premiere Reaction/Review
I managed to find a good livestream after all, so I got to watch the epp before any possible power loss, yay for that! \o/ On the other hand, the episode itself was pretty um, special...O_o

Sooo the episode started out okay, I LOVED all the flashbacks to Little!Amy/Rory and such, I mean I've been wanting Amy and her life and how she met Rory to be fleshed out since the premiere of season 5! Amy/Rory backstory, come to meeee....And this was all beautiful and adorable and amazing, Little!Amelia was always my fave anyway, so great to see her again, and omg Little!Rory was too dorky and cute I wanted to hug him then and there! <3333 And oh Amy, thinking poor Rory was gay, gah, nice to see these moments...although I have to say I liked it a bit less after the revelation that their sudden, never-before-mentioned "BFF" Mels (who I totally wondered about given the name) was actually intervening from the future to make them get together, this has to be my least favorite plot device ever! *sigh* *rolleyes* It's why I don't like ships like River/Doctor or Simon/Alisha, and why I don't like the Cupid thing in SN 5x14 regarding John/Mary...but yeah, I'll ignore that and just focus on the flashbacks I think!

It all went downhill from there though...and in the end it made even less sense than the last premiere! :/ I mean, really Moffat? And people don't give me that bullshit about "ohhh well if you don't get his plots it just means you're not ~clever~ enough or whatever--the reason I don't get his plots, like this one, is because they DON'T ACTUALLY MAKE ANY SENSE, he just throws in random crap and then shiny distractions to make it look more like his plots hold together, but really they don't, you're basically expected to just pretend they all make sense. In short, I think I've just about given up on Moffat's ability to make any sense with his arcs.../sigh I'm not even going to try to muddle through the mess of this episode and the River Song "revelations" here...(though ugh, her and her gun fixation, Ten would be facepalming forever at her, especially in this epp). The one time I liked...River, or whoever she was in this epp...was her line to the Nazis about going to a gypsy bat mitzvah for the disabled or whatever, etc, that was one of the only funny/notable lines of the night. Though also I guess we should be happy that they didn't actually really do much with Hitler in the end, just Moffat trolling viewers! *rolleyes*

The whole Robot Ship thing made me LOL too, it's like that stupid Eddie Murphy movie...also talk about a missed opportunity with the ship, when they first were looking at the TARDIS and like "omg now we have a real War Criminal!" I got all excited for a minute and thought they'd address the Doctor's involvement in the Time War and how he was responsible for the mass genocide of nearly two races, and go in dark, interesting places, kind of like how they touched on in "The Doctor's Wife" with the line, "Fear me, I've killed them all"...but no, they just talk about RIVER being one, just for killing the Doctor? :s I mean, really? Oh well...

But to go back to talking about more positive things, yay for the shout outs to the old companions, actually SEEING them and you know, acknowledging they existed! <333 I was scared for a moment when someone said it'd just be photographs, but this was more than that....THE TARDIS THOUGHT THE DOCTOR WOULD WANT TO SEE ROSE ONE MORE TIME AS HE DIED, SHE REMEMBERED THE LAST TIME! ;)

The TARDIS totally ships it...HE ASKED, "GIVE ME SOMEONE I LIKE" AND ROSE WAS THE FIRST ONE THE TARDIS GAVE HIM!!! :DDD And of course it was great to see Martha and Donna as well, though OMG, Eleven's reaction to all of them! ;_; Definitely interesting, I mean, I love seeing Guilty!Angsty!Eleven (we don't get enough of that), though I would have liked him to be a little happier at seeing Rose and co. perhaps...though still, it's notable I think that the TARDIS thought he'd want to see his old companions as Ten, rather than say Amy or Rory immediately. And I guess he should feel some guilt about Rose, in terms of missed opportunities and just leaving her there again in the alt!verse where she didn't want to go back to...gah. And of course he should definitely feel guilty about Martha and Donna...But yeah, ROSE and Martha and Donna were back on the TARDIS and in a scene with Eleven, sort of, so awesome! :) I hope some great fanvids come out of this, lol...

Oh and Amy/Rory were also fabulous outside of the flashbacks, and Eleven's new longer coat is SUPER sexy and hawt, and I approve of the change VERY much! ;) What can I say, I have a thing for the long coats...:p Next week's epp looks really boring though, IDK I'm like "what, creepy dolls, meh." But who knows...

What did you all think?

EDIT: Sorry if the post looks messed up, IDK why LJ keeps fucking up the html by automatically clicking "disable auto-formatting" for you whenever you try to edit, I mean WTF, why do they even have that, who would ever want to use it and undermine all their hmtl?! >:(

Hated it. I preferred River when she had fewer magical powers or whatever.

Plus, the fact that they got to "raise" their child so it's magically all okay is just horrifying.
sherrilina: Arthur/Morgana 3 (Merlin)sherrilina on August 28th, 2011 02:21 pm (UTC)
Omg thank you, ITA, glad you feel the same...and yes, seriously, how is growing up with someone "raising them" and count as raising your child? The fact that Amy and Rory will never get to raise their child is so sad/terrible, but the show isn't treating it as such....:/

Moffat:

Why? Just...why? WHY CAN'T IT BE WRITTEN SO THAT MERE MORTALS LIKE MYSELF UNDERSTAND THE THING?!

I liked the gay gypsy bat mitzvah line as well. But otherwise, River, didn't get it. Seriously WHAT THE EFF?!

Haha. So that's why you are so spiteful about DW ships. You're all hardcore at Doctor/Rose shipping? Not that I'm not...just, I end up shipping almost everybody with the Doctor haha. But we need to have a Doctor/Rose love fest at some point. Although I don't think the TARDIS ships them - it was going in order. I actually thought the whole Doctor/Little Amelia thing was quite touching!

Yes! Yes! Yes! Guilty/angsty Eleven FTW.

Lol, that gif is once again so appropriate for Moffat...*sigh*

Why? Just...why? WHY CAN'T IT BE WRITTEN SO THAT MERE MORTALS LIKE MYSELF UNDERSTAND THE THING?!

But that's just it, IMMORTALS shouldn't understand it either, because IT MAKES NO SENSE. Even if some people claim it does...

Eh, I don't really think I'm spiteful? O_o I mean, I don't like Doctor/River, no, but that's it (okay well and 11/Amy too I guess, but mainly because I get a whole grandfather/granddaughter vibe with them, and because there's RORY come on, and I like Amy/Rory--not because of Doctor/Rose, I was totally going in ready to ship the new companion/Doctor), and it has largely to do with RIVER herself and the whole messed up way the ship is developed, what with the lack of consent and trust engendered by one partner always knowing more about the other at any one time and always with-holding, and someone from the future coming and saying, "Yeah we have to get together"....I mean, did you not see me saying I disliked Simon/Alisha as well for similar reasons to why I disliked Doctor/River, and they have nothing to do with Rose (nor conflict with any major ship I have), do they?

It's not like I don't like the idea of the Doctor and anyone else necessarily, I can see the value in Doctor/Master for instance, and like Doctor/TARDIS...but not River/Doctor, sorry.

But we need to have a Doctor/Rose love fest at some point. Although I don't think the TARDIS ships them - it was going in order. I actually thought the whole Doctor/Little Amelia thing was quite touching!

We should! But I have to disagree about the TARDIS, it could have chosen to go in opposite order you know, I mean first off wouldn't Amelia be the logical place to start, the current companion he is with and presumably cares for? Also in the little segment where Amy asks the TARDIS to show previous travelers, Rose came up twice in the sequence...:p AND I think the TARDIS is fully aware of the feelings between them, after actually sharing a brain with Rose for a bit (they bonded that one time, lol, literally), and then being kissed out of Rose...;)

HAHAHA. TRUFAX :D

RE word choice spiteful, I didn't mean to offend you - you sound a little cheesed off! I'm saaaawwwy :(

No. No they do not.

but not River/Doctor, sorry.
GAH. IT'S OKAY, I THINK I WILL LIVE. :P :D
You know, I don't ship them that much. Just sayin'...

Rose showed up twice? I totally missed that. I just saw Rose, Martha, Donna, Little!Amelia... Meh. If Rose came up twice then you totes win, TARDIS ships 'em :) Also, this point is mute now, but I'm going to go for it anyway because I am ME: if Little!Amelia came up first then no chance for fun cameo appearances...

No I meant in the little extra scene in s5, the one between River's epps and Vampires of Venice on the DVD/YT? And the TARDIS shows some past companions...have you seen it?

I didn't think of it that way, but you're right, ugh, Suish again...and that's not even a legitimate trumping of the Doctor, it makes no sense! O_o

I actually liked the episode fine. When I heard about the Third Reich setting I was really really concerned. So I guess I was relieved it wasn't so upsetting in that regard.

I agree with what you wrote about "a real war criminal" - I also instantly thought they were talking about The Doctor and that it would have made for some great opportunities.

I thought Karen Gillan was fantastic in this episode. And despite the whole "I have to get my parents together so I exists" thing, I did like Mels. She was sassy.

And I agree, happy to see Rose and Martha and little Amelia.

Just my 2¢.
sherrilina: Doomsday Ten/Rosesherrilina on August 30th, 2011 12:18 am (UTC)
So I guess I was relieved it wasn't so upsetting in that regard.

But...it was. I mean, Moffat essentially BELITTLES the Holocaust, the deaths of 10 million people, as not that big a deal, in saying that River Song, for killing ONE man, is a far far greater war criminal than Hitler...what part of that isn't upsetting?! O_o Plus it's just so tacky to use a sensitive topic like Hitler anyway when it in the end had nothing to do with the plot really, they could have just picked a made-up space war criminal or whatever, this is sci-fi...

I did like Mels. She was sassy.

Meh, I don't always like it when people are sassy just for the sake of being sassy (unless they are in fact ~*SASSY*~, lol sorry, can't resist puns! :p), and I'm mostly annoyed with how much of an obvious retcon she is, I mean, Moffat couldn't even have the logical and self-evident reference when Amy reveals to Rory that she named her baby Melody? Like, "Wait, after our old friend Mels?" would have been perfect. Or you know, elsewhere in s5 and 6, rather than springing her at the last minute and pretending she was there all along...poor planning, Moffat!

But anyway, if you enjoyed the epp then more power to you! ;) And nice icon, I love seeing Martha and Rose put together like that, when people so often pit them as enemies or something...:s

with the plot really, they could have just picked a made-up space war criminal or whatever, this is sci-fi...

That's what I always think when they decide to incorporate the Third Reich in Sci-Fi. I was pretty annoyed when I heard the title. I'm not one who finds that there is anything amusing about Nazi Germany, and yet there are so many movies that have Hitler as a comedic/parody element. The reason why I said, it didn't upset me so much was that it was only a silly sidenote. Whereas I was really annoyed with all the fascist episodes back then with the Seventh Doctor. Basically because they conveyed that such evil can only be fought with alien help because it is in itself more alien than human. This denial of the human capability of evil I find an upsetting notion.

Well, I wasn't bored. Which I am by most TV these days.

Rose/Martha - I was always convinced that when they would meet, they'd like each other. Albeit only shown very briefly, that was what was shown on screen in the end which I was happy about. Also, reading fanfic always helps. ;)

Ah well I haven't seen any Seven yet, so IDK about those Fascist plots...I agree with someone though who said they think the Daleks represent Hitler figures (exterminate all races that are different! Aggressive invaders!) well anyway, and that they should stick with that represetation...

And lol, well I was kind of bored, though mostly just confused I guess!
Nina: <ja> bored like woahhoneymink on August 30th, 2011 05:02 am (UTC)
Hm, maybe you can see it that way but I prefer not to.

I have very low expectations when it comes to TV these days. So when there is something that doesn't totally piss me off, all is well.

We already sort of discussed this, but pretty much THIS to everything you said. Ugh. Moffat, how could you? I can't remember the last time I was so offended. I loved, loved, LOVED the flashback, and the callback to Rose, Martha, and Donna made me flail, but using Hitler and retconning in Mels?

NO.

I mean, seriously, would it have been SO DIFFICULT for Rory and Amy to have mentioned this so-called best friend ONCE in their lives? Like, oh, idk, when Rory finds out the baby's named Melody? "Great, just what Mels needs for her ego" or SOMETHING acknowledging that this person existed prior to this episode. Moffat is GREAT with the one episodes, but this is pretty much the perfect evidence of why he is not equipped to plot out an entire series. Because RTD? RTD sure as HELL would have mentioned her earlier instead of just having her plop in.

In terms of Mels intervening, though, at least it was pretty evident that Rory and Amy would get together eventually. She was just ... speeding it up. So it's not as bad as the other divine interventions.

Also, LJ sucks. I hate it right now. THAT STUPID DISABLE AUTO-FORMATTING THING. UGH. I had to move my 2011 scrapbook and fanvid masterlist to dreamwidth because it kept removing my formatting whenever I edited it. D=

(I'm not even going to address the issue of Hitler because we've already discussed it and it just makes me sick, tbh.)

OH, WAIT, WAIT, MORE EDITING! I, too, thought the real war criminal was the Doctor when they first mentioned it. I'm kind of annoyed that they skipped over that, because HI, DEFINITELY COMMITTED GENOCIDE. And lots of it. Killing one person does NOT make you a war criminal.

Again, glad we agree on all this! ;) Sometimes I see reactions and I'm like, "did I just watch the same episode? O_o" lol...(and we most of the time agree on the ~important things at least...;))

THISSSS! I mean anyone who thinks he actually planned this arc all out in advance is just kidding themselves...one of the problems with Amy, and ways in which Rose/Martha/Donna were always better in terms of characterization/development was the fact that you often had them referencing their friends and family--my mate Shareen in Rose's case, Martha's friend in her own situation with the guy, etc--which gave them an air of realism and being fleshed out, actual people, and which Amy really never had--there was just Rory. She totally could have mentioned "Mels" every now and then to fix this problem in s5-6 (or she could have shown up at the wedding, I mean, RIVER DID, WHAT HAPPENED TO NOT DOING THEM?!), or hell, Rory could have mentioned as you say, "What, you named her after our friend?" AS RECENTLY AS THIS SAME SEASON! DID YOU ONLY THINK OF THIS DURING THE BREAK?

In terms of Mels intervening, though, at least it was pretty evident that Rory and Amy would get together eventually. She was just ... speeding it up. So it's not as bad as the other divine interventions.

No, of course not, but still, it just rubbed me the wrong way, her hanging out there to make sure...or whatever...:/

IKR WTF WHY DO YOU EVEN HAVE THIS OPTION LJ?! :( :( :( I mean, I think this has happened to me before (I must have accidentally checked it in the past, there have been times I tried to edit and then everything would go wonky), but now it's like EVERY TIME WTF? It's since that new ~update which sucks...WE NEED TO COMPLAIN OKAY because I keep being complacent and all "whatever I'm sure others are complaining" but what if they're not?! We have to save LJ, this is unacceptable...

AT LEAST NOTHING HAPPENS WHEN YOU EDIT COMMENTS, EH? ;) :p

Yeah, I think Moffat needs to look up what the term "war criminal" actually means, he doesn't seem to actually know it.../eyeroll/

I was really disappointed in this episode, although I did like it better when I watched it again. Although this week's was much lighter, and didn't really have anything to do with the larger plot of this season, I enjoyed it much more (although I was able to figure out where they were going pretty quickly, which usually doesn't happen with Moffat, lolz)...

he just throws in random crap and then shiny distractions to make it look more like his plots hold together, but really they don't, you're basically expected to just pretend they all make sense

My very favorite part was the Doctor in the TARDIS with the voice interface system! "I can be brave for you..." <333
