The Nightmare Begins.....
....in a truer sense than I anticipated. My thoughts on the latest Merlin episode and on the direction of the show this season:

See I thought I'd like it more because it focuses on my fave character, but ultimately I found it to be mostly disappointing. :( Maybe my hopes were too high, but the episode just seemed a little disjointed and rushed--I thought we'd spend more times with the druids and learn something important from Mordred, and I also thought we'd, ya know, see the smallest SHRED of concern from Arthur towards the woman he's grown up with and loves (even as a sister, WHATEVER) and was SO desperate to save in 1x06--but nah, he seems to be totally blase about her disappearance/danger, tells Merlin off for being concerned (and not in a tense way like in 1x06 but in a "pssh!" way), and only goes after her on his father's orders! I think Arthur's utterly callous lack of interest in Morgana's well being/danger/fate cut me more than all the Arthur/Gwen moments thus far have, because while the latter only indicate a lack of romantic interest in Morgana, the former show he doesn't even care for her as a member of the family it seems--which is even worse. I hate that we cannot even have affection and bantering between them as siblings, just NOTHING....

I mean I get that Arthur/Morgana is not going to happen, that the writers decided to take the simplest route and drop that romantic storyline, but do we really have to eliminate all remnants of any kind of relationship between them?! *rolleyes* They have essentially not spoken to each other at ALL this season, and nor have they interacted--we see her tending to his wounds while he ignores her and them on the same horse from afar--VERY afar, apparently it would be too much to do a close-up of them on the horse as they arrive and him lowering her from the horse, though they remembered the close-ups a few moments later with the U/M hug! I feel so cheated by the writers--it's bad enough they lazily dropped my ship mid-series and are now pretending it never happened, but to also deny us ANY interaction between them as well? Come on!

And Gwen too, we didn't see her being concerned about Morgana's "kidnap" either, we just see her giving Morgana a weird, kind of askance look as she hugs Uther on her return. It's like she and Arthur are so into each other now that they couldn't care less about Morgana, and it sickens me......I don't like not seeing Gwen when she logically should be there any more than I like seeing a lack of Morgana where she logically should be....

It's like the same thing with Arthur/Merlin, it's like the writers have screwed up and dropped/changed everyone's relationship to each other, probably mostly in the name of "developing" Arthur/Gwen (because forget all the progress Merlin's made on changing Arthur, SHE will be responsible for all the change now!).....or because they got lazy and lost their talent, IDK....

I was happy that Merlin FINALLY told off stupid Gauis about drugging Morgana and misleading her, I mostly love Gauis but his treatment of Morgana is creepy and sickening. Oh and at least UTHER was concerned about Morgana (glad to see someone was worried!), the hug at the end (or BOTH hugs, love that he came back for seconds!) was lovely and touching, and I loved it when he said that "if she dies, a part of me would die with her", awwww....at least the Uther/Morgana shipper in me was satisfied! :D I'm more and more inclined to say, "Forget Arthur, Uther/Morgana all the way!" More talk on her dad was also nice, I like that Uther did know Morgana well enough in that regard, though what he didn't know is that she wasn't quite running away so much as running towards something....

Oh and I like Merlin/Morgana well enough, so I kind of enjoyed that as well, although for some reason I wasn't feeling it as much this epp as I normally do. Maybe the ick-worthy Arthur exchange at the end (in which he's all too clearly referring to himself and Gwen) spoiled it a little for me. *sigh* Though there was also Merlin refusing to give Morgana the small comfort of confirming that she probably has magic--I mean I know he can't reveal his secret to her lightly, but to even deny her the tiny comfort of not feeling like she's going crazy? Give me a break!

Oh and was anyone else a little disturbed about how gung-ho and without question Arthur was willing to slaughter the druids and stuff because Uther said to do so?  I might feel a little better about it if it was because he was as worried as Uther about Morgana, but his attitude/tone seemed more like, "Right, you heard the orders, no prisoners!" not, "For Morgana! No prisoners..." or something like that. I wonder if this was the turning point making Mordred turn against Arthur (even though Arthur had once saved his life), I hope not, since I want to see more of Mordred....do you guys think he killed those men he knocked over by screaming? I wonder if Merlin, upon seeing this, is rethinking the "magic can be good, yays!" platform....I found Mordred's "Hey Emerys" to be rather interesting, I wonder if he blames him too? In all I was sad the Wise Black Druid died....:(

Also there's the dragon. Why is this dragon so against Morgana now, when a) he was all for her when she was killing Uther and b) when he was all for another witch, Nimueh, who ACTUALLY threatened the lives of Arthur AND Merlin, both of whom the dragon is so keen to keep alive, for purposes of escaping one day? It makes no sense, and is ridiculous....lazy writing again, probably. Oh well, at least it means Morgana won't be the dragon's new protegee, as I feared after seeing her hear the dragon at the end of 1x13 (btw writers, good job on following that one up! *rolleyes* ), and since I rather dislike the dragon I say if he hates her, she's all the more awesome! :D

And to think I was so excited over the summer when I saw the pics of Arthur and Morgana in the courtyard with the horses, looking like they were going on a trip together....but it turned out to be no more exciting or meaningful ship-wise than the pic of her tending to his (ungrateful) wounds!

I thought that my spirits would be lifted by this episode, but I find myself more depressed by this show than ever....:(  I also have to wonder about the title--I sure hope the "nightmare" in question isn't Morgana herself in the future as a witch!

But still, it was sure nice to see Morgana, and some nice development on her story arc, given she was essentially MIA in the last episode and so little in 2x01 and 1x13 for that matter as well....it is rather unfortunate that my favorite character is Morgana, given how little she seems to be in the show much of the time!  I kind of wish she had been able to stay with the druids though.....

Luckily my other shows are going pretty well for now, except perhaps for Bones, which I haven't been keeping up with at the moment....more on that later.

Sorry to hear Merlin isn't going well. I probably shouldn't be reading your blog about it as to not be spoiled, but I can't help myself! :)

I, also, enjoy Bones and have enjoyed this season so far. It seems to have gone back to that fun procedural from before the Booth-tumor, so I'm all for that!

Well I haven't seen any Bones since the premiere, actually, I just have too much to do and too many shows I'm watching to keep up with all of them, and I guess since Bones doesn't have a continuous arc maybe? I don't know, but I'm taping it for now and will catch up over the holidays or something....

And thanks for the hugs! :)

UGH. I am not enjoying this season so far. They're working in cool stuff (like Morgana. FINALLY. WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN.) but ...really, I'm just not getting Arthur this season. He's just not the same, and it isn't out of him getting better.

And I don't even need romantic Arthur/Morgana. But at least acknowledge that they KNOW each other! I feel like relationships/friendships with Arthur were somehow much more developed last season than they are right now, with the exception of Gwen. Why is THAT the sudden focus of the show? I really hope this show isn't about how the apparently epic Arthur/Gwen (though I had no knowledge that they were that great) comes to be...it seems kind of...IDK, lazy.

I think I'm going to start confusing my frustrations with this show with my anger at Smallville. They are actually pretty similar right now, as I'm finding.

Glad I'm not the only one not feeling the love this season! :( So true, Arthur has just been totally sucking this season (plus next week he's going to see a half-naked Morgana kicking ass in the woods and, without paying any attention to her, ask where Gwen is? Really?! *rolleyes*)....he may have to be kicked off of Team Platinum if he doesn't shape up soon....

And I don't even need romantic Arthur/Morgana. But at least acknowledge that they KNOW each other! I feel like relationships/friendships with Arthur were somehow much more developed last season than they are right now, with the exception of Gwen.
SRSLY!!! Same here, I mean I get it, AMor isn't going to have any romance, but is it really too much to have ANY interaction between them PERIOD?! *rolleyes* They STILL have not spoken a WORD to one another, and when he showed so little concern for her that he told off Merlin for worrying....I wanted to slap him! And Gwen too barely seemed to care, we didn't see her worried about Morgana's kidnap and then at the end instead of looking happy to see Morgana and giving her a hug we just see her kind of look askance at Morgana...at least Uther still cares, I loved it when he said part of him would die with her if she died....screw Arthur, at this point Uther can just be with her!

And yeah, I guess the writers didn't get the memo that Arthur/Gwen is anything BUT epic, hello, she CHEATS on him! *rolleyes* At least there will be some L/G next epp, the only Gwen ship I like, and Lancelot is so much hotter this season.

And yeah, from what I hear of Smallville this season it's one and the same....except for Arthur having a love interest BEFORE the final one. Guess we should have been warned when we knew SV was Merlin's inspiration....

EDIT: And yeah, Morgana has been in FAR too little, where indeed? I wish she had stayed with the damn druids...

I completely agree with this post.
Arthur's improved since like...2x04...no. More like 2x05, at least in regards to Merlin and maybe a tiny bit towards Morgana, but still...it felt like the writers were on drugs or something for those first 2 episodes. I was so happy Morgana got her own episode though! :D
Would it be so hard to have an episode with both Morgana and Gwen at the center, though?!

Well I feel that he was okay in 2x05 (can't say he was any better towards Morgana since they didn't exchange a word then!), and haven't seen 2x06 yet, so can't really judge...*sigh*

And yeah, it was nice that Morgana got her own episode, although even in her own episode I feel like we didn't have enough time with Morgana herself, and then the horrendous assassination of Arthur/Morgana once and for all is so awful it mars the rest of the episode, IMO...:(

And apparently it's impossible to just focus on the ladies....I mean, I know the show is Merlin, but they've managed before to not focus on Merlin as much (he really isn't in 1x12 so much, and Morgana ends up being the one who saves the day--in some ways I think that is the more Morgana-centric episode, even though 2x03 ostensibly was).

I love your comments about Merlin and I absolutely agree with everything you said. I am so glad that I found people who see things from my perspective.

And If you want to join there is an ArMor campaign:

I still refuse to believe that they won't revisit Arthur/Morgana in future seasons cause it has a great potential.
sherrilina: Arthur/Morgana 2 (Merlin)sherrilina on February 7th, 2010 05:57 am (UTC)
Hmmm, I'm not sure how effective this campaign would be (especially for people from my side of the pond, who *theoretically* haven't seen season 2 yet, lol), but I'll try to send at least one or two postcards! :) Even if only to register my complaint/sadness at their random and sudden abandonment of it...*sigh*

And thanks! :)
