Day 11 – A show that disappointed you:

I think that all shows invariably disappoint you at one time or another, but I don’t know if any show has disappointed me as early on (only in season 2!) and as deeply as Merlin has. :( I fell for this show so hard during season 1, it was definitely my favorite new show and new fandom obsession, and I couldn't get enough of it (both my first mood theme and first custom header were Merlin-related, and still are). I remember staying up late to wait for links and watch it on many a Saturday night (since I was ahead of the UK an hour then), and spending so much time discussing the show on comms and such, and spending the whole summer dreaming and speculating and full of anticipation for season two.

But then season 2 hit, and with each episode my anger and frustration grew, and my obsession with and love for the show withered. Unfortunately for me, my favorite character in this ensemble show was Morgana, and my favorite character interactions were between Arthur and Morgana, so as both these favorite aspects of the show became neglected, OOC, and kaput, I became more and more disappointed. It wasn't just though that all my hopes and expectations for Morgana's storyline (suggested for instance by the fact that she woke up after hearing the dragon in the end of season 1, which went nowhere) went unfulfilled, or that we barely ever saw her onscreen or in character anymore. There were other characterization and writing problems as well (especially surrounding Arthur), and some really godawful episodes and MOTWs (troll anyone?)...I also think that some problems that were a little bit visible in season 1 (like the exposure of the female characters) became magnified in season 2.

In short, while I'm still going to watch the show, and while I still stay active in fandom largely thanks to merlin_land, it really disappointed me, and now I am trying to have NO expectations whatsoever about season 3...:(

I also finally picked up City of Bones from the library last Thursday (I was on a waiting list), so hopefully I will have time to finish reading that, though I also still have a lot left in Wolf Hall...O_o  I wish I had time for both reading and TV watching....

You'll have to post a review of City of Bones when you finish! I'm actually really interested to hear your thoughts, especially with Cassie Claire's reputation in fandom (and all that plagiarism stuff blah blah blah)...

IKR?! I couldn't believe it when I saw she was published now, with a whole fandom of her own now! :s. Although I noticed that she took out the "I" in her last name when publishing....

I half didn't want to read it because of her, but so many people have raced about them that I wanted to give them a try. I have read the first half of the book, last September (I checked it out of the library but then had to return it and was too busy to finish then), and wasn't overly impressed (it definitely borrows a LOT from HP--young protagonist suddenly learns she's a special being, and part of this secret magical society, in which an evil racial supremacist being named V-something that was believed to be dead might in fact be back, etc! :p), but it seemed to have some potential, and I hear it gets better...

Yeah! It's totally crazy! Were you around the Harry Potter fandom when all of that Cassie Claire stuff went down??

Have you finished yet? Any more thoughts?? :o)

(Icon love, as always! :DDD )
